About Us |
The
Centre for Indian Bamboo Resource and Technology is a not-for-profit
organization incorporated in December 2002, under Section 25 of
the Indian Companies Act 1956. It serves as a catalyst to the development
of bamboo industry in India, particularly in rural areas, undertaking
various collaborative livelihood development projects. |
CIBART’s
purpose is to work towards sustainable socio-economic
and environmental development through the use of bamboo and rattan (cane).
As these two commodities are essentially the resources of rural communities,
these communities form the primary beneficiary of CIBART’s activities. |
CIBART
is driven by professionals from diverse backgrounds but dedicated to furthering
bamboo and rattan as tools for sustainable development. The approach CIBART
takes is unique and community-focused, one that respects traditional knowledge
and skills but uses, wherever possible, modern technologies to enhance
these. It services communities at their doorstep, taking experts, resources
and tools to the communities and ensuring that all the backward and forward
linkages are in place. |
CIBART
has up independent daughter organizations that professionally
manage bamboo and cane activities in their respective area of operation.
The local communities hold the majority shares in these organizations.
While CIBART’s work is essentially community-based and largely specific
to local needs, it adopts a global outlook, considering the communities
as the prime mover of sustained development. |
Coupled
with the people’s natural affinity to bamboo, the rich bamboo resources
of India offer immense opportunities. CIBART will help actualize this
untapped potential by guiding and training communities to set up bamboo-based
enterprises. |
The
programs of CIBART are facilitated by the strong ties
it has with the International Network of Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR)—the
inter-governmental, international organization with mandate to improve
the socio-economic well being of producers and users of bamboo and rattan. |
INBAR
and CIBART have partnered to set up a Documentation Centre (Doc
Centre) at Bangalore, India, primarily to capture the experience of
INBAR’s field projects for process and project documentation. |

CIBART's Logo |
CIBART’s
logo symbolizes the intimate association that bamboo has with the earth,
the people and development. The green colour, besides representing the
earth’s abundance, also denotes the renewability and environment
friendliness of bamboo resources. The lighter green strip on which bamboo
stands denotes bamboo’s capability to rehabilitate wasteland. The
two blue strips at the bottom of the logo represent the potential of bamboo
to conserve and protect water resources. The rising sun and the blue sky
stand for the new development opportunities that bamboo can offer the
people, represented in the logo by a small rural family. |
